My name is Mischka Strydom and I started cycling 8 years ago and began competing in 2016.
I fell in love with this sport immediately and know that it will always be part of my life, whether as a career or recreational.
I compete in road, track and MTB races and have had some good results, however I soon realized that my preferred discipline was road cycling and my ultimate dream is to be included into an International Ladies World Tour Cycling Team.
I have achieved 71 race podiums, 30 SA Championship Medals and 6 International Championship Medals over this period; including a SA Record in the SA Team Pursuit in Track.
I won my first-ever individual South African Gold Medal at SA Track last year (2019) and it was a huge honour to receive the white SA jersey.
I was then selected to represent South Africa at the Africa Continental Track Championships, which was held in Pietermaritzburg in 2019, in the junior woman’s division and obtained 3 Gold Medals, 1 Silver Medal and 2 Bronze Medals for South Africa. I was also included in the junior woman’s team to participate at the Junior Track Worlds Championships which was held in Germany, August 2019. This was a huge learning curve and South African riders have much work to do to get to race at that level.
This year, I was included in the Team to represent South Africa at the 2020 Africa Continental Track Championships in the junior woman’s division which is to be held in Egypt, January 2020 and I was also selected to represent South Africa at the Africa Continental Road Championships in the junior woman’s division originally planned for March 2020 in Mauritius.
Due to financial reasons, I could only attend one of the International races for my country (as these are self-funded) and so, I decided to represent South Africa in the Road Race instead, however with the COVID-19 pandemic this has been postponed.
2020 has been a good year thus far and in my age-group, I have won the Eastern Cape Road Championships ITT and Road Races, Value Logistics the Fast One, Dischem Ride for Sight and The Herald Cycle Tour. This has placed me in first position in the Junior Woman’s division on the Support SA Talent’s log.
I hope to finish off this year on a high note and do well at SA’s and hopefully be selected for the Road World Championships later this year.
Unfortunately our federation has no money to sponsor cyclists selected for the National Team, to participate in the Africa Continental Road Championships. The event was originally planned for March but due to COVID-19 restrictions has been postponed until later in the year. My parents had to self-fund me to participate in this event in Mauritius and this has placed a great burden on them over this time.
I am seeking some assistance in raising this money so that I can pay my parents back and still participate in Mauritius when the new race date is announced. It has always been my dream to represent South Africa in Road Cycling abroad and your contribution will assist me in achieving this dream.
